The Democratic Autonomous Administration of Al-Jazira Region released a statement on the killing of Qamishlo Canton Council co-chair Yusra Darwis, her deputy Leman Shweish and their driver Fırat Tuma in an attack carried out by the Turkish state on the Qamishlo-Tirbespiyê road on Tuesday.
The attack took place at the same time as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced that it would start prosecuting ISIS gangs.
Yusra Darwish
Yusra Mihemed Darwish was born in 1972 in Amudê in the Qamishlo canton. She graduated from a French language university in 2001.
After the 19 July 2012 Rojava Revolution, she stopped studying in the Baath system and joined the revolution. She first worked as a teacher of Kurdish. Later, she became the school principal at Betûl High School in Amudê. She was also one of the founders of the School Management Institutions in Amudê and was later elected as the co-chair of the Amudê Education Committee.
After working for a long time in the field of education, she was elected co-chair of the Qamishlo Canton Council on 1 November 2022.
Darwish led the actions to condemn the isolation against Leader Abdullah Öcalan and played an active role in the women's liberation struggle across Kurdistan.
Darwish worked for general social change and the organization of social and political activities in the canton, the organization of communities since the beginning of the revolution.
She played an important role in collecting aid for the 6 February earthquake victims in North Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria. She held meetings with many sections of society and local tribes to help earthquake victims.
