Kurdish and German women held a rally and march in Düsseldorf, with the main slogan of "From Kurdistan to the world Jin Jiyan Azadi", on the occasion of 8 March, International Working Women's Day.
Feminist women's initiatives, women's branches of various unions and the women's platform formed by NRW YJK-E came together in front of DGB Haus. In the speeches made by Kurdish, German, Iranian and Chinese women at the rally, attention was drawn to the exploitation of the patriarchal system of the female body and labor, violence against women and femicide. It was emphasized that the emancipation of women can only be achieved through a common struggle.
Candles were lit at the rally to commemorate those who lost their lives in the earthquake in February.
YJK-E spokesperson Ayten Kaplan said: “Today, as mothers and sisters, we once again took to the streets for our values. We have not accepted and have fought against any kind of exploitation of women for decades. We took to the streets not only because we are women, but because our rights were taken away from us, because we were exposed to discrimination, sexism and inequality."
Ayten Kaplan also touched upon the earthquake in Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria, and said: ''We pay tribute to those who lost their lives. Earthquake is a natural disaster. But it is possible to minimize the devastating consequences of such disasters. Hundreds of thousands of buildings were destroyed as a result of wrong government policies, and more than 150 thousand people lost their lives, according to the findings of independent institutions. The Turkish state declared a state of emergency in 11 provinces instead of mobilizing and send all its institutions to earthquake zones to help people.”
