The event calendar of the women's association Kongra Star, the umbrella organization of the women’s movement in Northern and Eastern Syria, for 8 March once again offers a rich program this year.
As part of this year's International Women's Day, various seminars on the topics of feminism and gender equality are currently taking place. The workshops are aimed at men and deal with fundamental questions about sex, gender and participation. The first events took place this weekend in Til Hemîs and Amûdê. Around thirty men took part in each event.
At these seminars, Kongra Star tries to make social power structures in gender relations, privileges and structural inequalities visible and to encourage men to question hierarchical power structures and deconstruct hegemonic masculinities.
"The future is female, we always say. Equality, self-determination and freedom are guarantees of democratic confederalism, which we want to put into practice. Even though a lot has already changed, such as the political culture and women being represented everywhere in the councils and municipalities, complete equality has not yet been achieved here either," explained the women at the seminar.
