Tens of thousands of women and people of other identities are taking part in the 36th Plurinational Meeting of Women and Dissidents in Bariloche, Argentina. The Kurdish women's movement was represented with a video message.
The 36th Plurinational Meeting of Women and Dissidents (36° Encuentro Plurinacional de Mujeres y Disidencias) began in Bariloche, Argentina, on Saturday. The event was first held in Buenos Aires in 1986. Tens of thousands of people are taking part in the three-day meeting today. The programme includes more than 100 workshops and 150 cultural activities.
The meeting opened with a contribution from the Mapuche people of Patagonia, emphasising the importance of indigenous peoples' struggle for existence in resistance to colonialism and calling for the release of all political prisoners.
A video message from Besê Erzincan of the Community of Kurdistan Women (KJK) from the Kurdish mountains was played on the main stage. The KJK is internationally networked with other women's movements and calls for world women's confederalism. A workshop organised by Feministas el Abya Yala and a solidarity committee of the Kurdish women's movement at the meeting deals with the topic "Women's Revolution in Kurdistan and the World".
The Encuentro is considered an important platform for defending the rights of indigenous peoples and networking the struggles of women and other oppressed identities.
