We Will Stop Femicide Platform: At least 394 women were murdered in 2024

The "We Will Stop Femicide Platform" said that at least 394 women were murdered in 2024.

The We Will Stop Femicide Platform (KCDP), Women's Assemblies, and the Federation of Young Feminists held a press conference at the Zübeyde Ana Cultural Center in Istanbul to share data on male violence in 2024. Many women attended the event.

Esin Izel Uysal, a representative of the KCDP Women's Assemblies, said: "Femicide is one of the most pressing issues in this country."

KCDP Secretary General Fidan Ataselim said: "Even though they try to make us forget this, women are being murdered by men. I will share the consequences of the failure to implement Law No. 6284, family-centered policies, and impunity. In 2024, 394 femicides occurred. In addition, 259 women died in suspicious circumstances. Last year, we warned the political authorities: as long as family-centered policies are implemented, more women will be killed. And this sadly happened. Seventy-one percent of the women were murdered within their families. We warned that these murders would increase. Forty-two percent of women were killed by their husbands. Women were murdered by their fathers, husbands, men they were trying to divorce, or former husbands. What family are you talking about protecting and strengthening? Fifty-seven percent of women were killed in the homes where they were confined, within the so-called sacred family structures. Most women are murdered by firearms. Failing to take action against this is tantamount to complicity in these murders. Women’s lives cannot be left to the chance of a gun misfiring."

Ataselim underlined that only 42 of the perpetrators had criminal records, adding: "We have protested after women were killed by men who were released despite repeated criminal offenses. When we try to stop femicides, when we march, they put handcuffs on our wrists and on the wrists of journalists who expose reality — but not on the wrists of murderers and rapists. We are talking about cases closed as 'suicides,' murders disguised as accidents, and killers being released. In 2024, we launched a mobilization for the enforcement of Law No. 6284. Ministries should explain: what is the trajectory of femicides? Our data does not align with the data provided by the ministries; let’s compare their data with ours. They claim, ‘After withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention, femicides decreased,’ but their own data contradicts this claim. Let’s fight together until we achieve full and true equality. Together, let’s stop femicides."

Child murders

Güneş Şahin, a representative of the Federation of Young Feminists, drew attention to the rise in murders of children and young women: "This year, the number of girls killed by their fathers increased fourfold compared to 2023. Families are presented to us as very safe spaces. We talked about Narin, but we still don’t know the full truth. These incidents show that families are not as ideal as the AKP (Justice and Development Party) tries to portray it. The families you impose on us are like this. The government is responsible for what happens to girls and young women. What happens in those homes? Are the children subjected to abuse or violence? The government must monitor all of this. We warned the AKP: you are subjecting girls to the domination of their fathers, and with your family policies, you are causing an increase in the murder of women. Unfortunately, our predictions came true.”

We will achieve equality through our struggle'

Highlighting that women in this country are dying under "suspicious" circumstances and that the authorities fail to investigate these deaths, Güneş Şahin continued: "I have a photo here from the protest we organized on 12 October for İkbal and Ayşenur. Thousands of women from universities and high schools participated in this action. We feel a sense of responsibility. As a feminist fighting in this country, I can say that the true hope of this nation lies in our young feminists, who fill the streets for their friends. We will achieve equality through our struggle."
