Mina Soltani, the mother of Shahriar Mohammadi, a protester killed during the anti-government 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' (Woman, Life, Freedom) uprising in 2022 in Bukan, has been sentenced to eight months in prison and fined 10 million rials, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) reported.
Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court of Bukan sentenced Soltani on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “presence of women in public spaces and in plain view without the Islamic hijab”.
According to information obtained by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, her trial took place on 15 February in Branch 101 of the Second Criminal Court of Bukan, presided over by Judge Mehdi Fakhri.
The hearing took place without a defence lawyer and the verdict was delivered to her orally in the last few days, KHRN has learned.
Over the past two years, Soltani has been repeatedly summoned, arrested, and threatened by security forces.
On 11 September 2024, she was arrested without a warrant at her home in Bukan, and was held in the women’s section of Orumiyeh Central Prison for 21 days before being released on bail.
During her detention at the Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Orumiyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, she was denied access to legal representation and family visits.
Her son, Shahriar Mohammadi, was shot and wounded by security forces during anti-government protests in Bukan on 18 November 2022, and later died in hospital due to his injuries.
