Zerdeşt Oduncu (30), a sick prisoner in Antalya High Security Closed Prison, is not being treated despite his health problems.
On 12 February 2014, three days before the anniversary of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan being handed over to Turkey by an international conspiracy on 15 February 1999, Oduncu set his body on fire and developed inflammation in his body due to delayed treatment. Imprisoned for 10 years and sentenced to 174 years in prison, Oduncu is kept in solitary confinement.
The prisoner’s mother, Selma Oduncu, stated that her son was not taken to hospital. Selma Oduncu said that she had a phone call from her son, stating the following: “Zerdeşt has called today. His wounds are inflamed because he set his body on fire before. He stated that he was meant to be referred to the faculty but was not taken there. His wounds are bruised. When they took him to the infirmary, they examined him with his hands handcuffed. He said that his hands were bruised and sore because of the handcuffs. He said that he was not treated when they took him to the infirmary and that soldiers tortured him on the way. We call on human rights defenders to hear the voices of our children. These practices should be stopped.”
