European Parliament and DEM delegation visits Shengal

A delegation from the European Parliament and the DEM Party has visited Shengal to assess the current situation of the Yazidi community.

A joint delegation consisting of members of the European Parliament and representatives of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Europe visited Shengal. The delegation was welcomed by the Shengal Autonomous Administration and conducted on-site observations regarding the situation of the Yazidi (Êzidî) community.

The delegation’s arrival in Shengal was delayed by nearly five hours due to military checkpoints and obstructions imposed by the Iraqi army. Apologizing for the delay, the Shengal Autonomous Administration expressed regret for the disruption. Members of the delegation, however, shared their appreciation for the visit, stating, “It was worth the wait, seeing Shengal was incredibly important.”

As part of the visit, the delegation is expected to hold meetings at key institutions such as the Free Êzidî Women's Movement (TAJÊ), the Martyr Berxwedan site, and the Dilgeş Martyrs’ Cemetery. The Shengal Autonomous Administration also presented the delegation with a comprehensive report detailing the current conditions of the Yazidi community.

The delegation includes the following names:

- Martin Schirdewan, Member of the European Parliament and Co-Chair of The Left Group

- Philip Degenhard, Vice President of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation

- Faik Yağızay, Strasbourg Representative of the DEM Party

- Dr. Sarah Glynn, advisor to Faik Yağızay

- Nora Friese-Wendenburg, assistant to Martin Schirdewan

The visit is expected to draw attention in the European public opinion to the challenges faced by the Yazidi community and to enhance the international visibility of the Shengal Autonomous Administration.
