Many Behdinan activists and journalists in Hewler prison started a hunger strike on 19 July with the slogan "Freedom or death" to protest the attacks against them.

The Freedom and Human Rights Defense Network issued a written statement to draw attention to the worsening health status of the prisoners.

The statement said: “There is a very serious threat to the lives of the detainees. Despite this, the number of hunger strikers is increasing day by day. Now their number has reached 65 people. Arresting and punishing these activists and journalists is a gross violation of the region, Iraq and the international declaration of human rights."
