Livorno: the 5th sister city of Kobanê in Italy

Livorno City Council has approved with the majority of the votes the friendship and fellowship project with Kobanê, Qamişlo and Suruç.

Livorno City Council has approved with the majority of the votes the friendship and fellowship project with Kobanê, Qamişlo and Suruç, becoming the fifth city in Italy which developed town twinning with the mentioned Kurdish cities after Napoli, Genova, Palermo and Rome.

Representatives from Livorno Municipality will join the delegation that will visit Suruç on 12-17 September to demand the opening of humanitarian aid corridor into Kobanê.

Livorno City Council and the representatives of the political parties in the council held a press conference the previous day jointly with Kurdistan Information Bureau UİKİ ONLUS, Mezza Lunna Kurdistan İtalia Onlus ( MLRK) and Rete Kurdistan voicing the need for the opening of humanitarian aid corridor into Kobanê. The press conference was attended by Livorno mayor Cepperallo Giovanna, vice-mayor Stella Sorgenta, councellor Marco Brucati, representative of the party of Cinque Stelle, Daniele Esposito and PD representative Alessio Ciampini.

Boungiorno Party Assembly member Marco Brucati, who will also join the delegation to visit Suruç on 12-17 September in the scope of the works for the opening of a humanitarian aid corridor into Kobanê, made a speech at the conference drawing attention to the fact that thousands of people had to leave the town after the attacks of the ISIS gangs and the returnees are facing problems to meet their basic needs of electricity, water and food.

Brucati stressed that the the network of solidarity with Kobanê in Italy must be strengthened and said the Rojava cantons must be internationally recognised, also asking support to the campaign launched to provide help for the rebuilding of the war-torn town.

Brucati also announced that the city council of Livorno approved with the majority of the votes the fellowship and frienship project to be developed with Kobanê, Qamislo and Suruç.

Head of Cıtta Diversa Group, Marco Cannito, also made a speech, calling attention to isolation of Kurdish Leader Abdullah Öcalan in Imralı Island. Cannito said they consider the isolation on Öcalan as an imposition on all Kurds, and called Italian community to keep the issue on the agenda and the Italian parliament to take action in this regard.
