BDP and AKP hails a new era of dialogue

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials called for a continued dialogue after talks on new constitution.

BDP, co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaþ and Gültan Kýþanak attended talks with AKP's Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek and Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin.

The talks, which were originally planned to be held last week but were postponed due to the Hakkari attack that killed nine Kurds.

“There is no doubt the problems will not be resolved with only a single meeting, but the talks opened the way for more negotiations and dialogue,” Demirtaþ told reporters following the talks.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed plans to draft a new constitution following the Sept. 12 referendum, in which constitutional changes were approved by 58 percent of the public.

“A new page is expected to open with the referendum as the citizens voted for democracy,” Çiçek said. “The way forward includes a new constitution, but there is a need for a high-quality discussion about it first. We need to discuss both the methodology and the content.”

Echoing Çiçek’s remarks, Demirtaþ said a new constitution was needed because it was the most influential way to serve the cause of peace. “This process should not be delayed,” he said.

Demirtaþ also called for an end to the bloodshed. Asked if his party would seek another appointment with the government, he said there was no new request for a meeting, but that dialogue and discussions should continue. “The BDP will continue to exist as a political actor,” the party co-chair said.

Çiçek said Parliament was the only place where the country’s problems can be solved. “We began to talk. We’ll talk with everyone,” he said.
