DEM Party co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan met with the EU Delegation and diplomatic representatives from 31 countries including the US, France, England, Germany, Japan, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Portugal and Brazil in Ankara. The meeting was organized by Foreign Relations Commission co-spokespersons Ebru Günay and Berdan Öztürk.
Tülay Hatimoğulları drew attention to the developments in Syria and said: "Now, the duty that falls on all of us is to ensure a peaceful transition process and the formation of an administration that will include all sections of society."
Hatimoğulları also spoke about the attacks on Kurds and said that the model created by the Kurds is the most realistic model for a solution and that the attacks are aimed at eliminating this solution model. "The status of Kurds should be recognized, they should be given the opportunity to live equally with other nations."
Hatimoğulları stated that news of attacks and massacres targeting Alevis also worried the DEM Party. In addition, she underlined that politicians such as Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, Can Atalay and Osman Kavala are still being held in prison because the decisions of the ECHR and Constitutional Court have not been implemented, and demanded that isolation ends as soon as possible in order for these unlawful practices to be eliminated.
'Isolation should be lifted'
Tuncer Bakırhan, on the other hand, assessed the domestic political developments and said that the oppressive approach towards the opposition in Turkey was encouraged by the attitude of many governments around the world. Drawing attention to the situation of Demirtaş, Yüksekdağ, Atalay and Kavala, Bakırhan stated that a step should be taken to right the wrong. Speaking about the developments that have taken place since 1 October, Bakırhan said that despite all the positive statements, the attacks on the DEM Party and its municipalities continued. Bakırhan also pointed out the role of Abdullah Öcalan, and stated that this role was recognized even by the MHP, and therefore isolation should be lifted as soon as possible. Bakırhan said that all relevant circles should approach the developments in both the region and Turkey within the framework of universal democratic and legal principles.
The meeting then continued with a question and answer session.
