Demonstration for Öcalan in front of the CPT continues

The sit-in in front of the CPT and CoE demanding urgent meeting with Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan continues with growing support.

The sit-in launched in Strasbourg on October 23 demanding an urgent visit by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) to Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı Prison, has left 11 days behind.

Dozens of Kurdish and Turkish citizens in addition to representatives of other peoples and faith groups are joining and supporting the sit-in which was started in the wake of the news spread on social media in Turkey regarding Öcalan’s situation.

Activists from across Europe, representatives of several organizations and leftist movements from Turkey have supported the action so far, as well as assemblies under the Kurdish Women’s Movement in Europe (TJK-E) and Kurdish Youth Movement Ciwanen Azad.

On the 11th day of the sit-in action, demonstrators continued to urge the CPT to do its job and visit İmralı immediately as millions of Kurds are concerned over the safety of Öcalan who hasn’t been allowed to meet with his lawyers since July 27, 2011 and with the Imrali Delegation since April 5, 2015. When Kurdish politicians launched a non-alternate indefinite hunger strike, he was allowed to meet with his brother Mehmet Öcalan on September 11, 2016, and hasn’t been heard from since. The latest news have increased concerns for his health and safety.

Kurdish TV networks Stêrk and Medya continue their live broadcast from the demonstration which also hosts panel discussions on various subjects with high participation. Demonstrators once again conveyed their demand to the CPT officials Thursday afternoon.

Artists Sara Zagros, Maruf, Farqin Azad, Şefik Yıldız and Sileman Çarnewa have joined the demonstrators on Thursday in solidarity with their demand to know about the situation of the Kurdish leader.
