Dozens of prisoners in İzmir test positive for Covid-19

Following the detection of a Covid-19 case in Buca prison in western Turkey, broader testing of prisoners has begun. To date, 64 infections have been detected.

After a Covid-19 infection was detected in a prisoner in Buca prison near İzmir province, investigations were started into the spread of the pandemic in prisons. A further 64 prisoners who were in contact with the infected prisoner were found to be infected with Covid-19. A 70-year-old inmate was hospitalized.

Prisoners in Turkey are highly threatened by Covid-19. The regime's amendment to the law on execution excludes political prisoners in particular from being released because of the pandemic, while other offenders have been released on the spot.
