Human rights reports contradict the Turkish minister

No human rights violations took place within the last six months and no police officer is on trial” said Beþir Atalay, the Turkish Interior Minister. While the human rights reports contradict the minister about violations they confirm his statement about no trials against the police.

While the Turkish minister claimed that no human rights violations has occurred in Turkey within the last 6 months, Human Rights Foundation of Turkey TIHV contradicted the minister in which it is stated that “Between 1 January- 30 June 2010 there have been 2 political killings by unknown person or persons, 15 extrajudicial killings by the security forces. 3 in police custody 22 in prisons 25 detainees and prisoners in total committed suicide or lost their lives in quarrels. Although the deaths are disputed, the state officials failed to conduct proper investigations regarding the incident. Similarly, no case or investigates were launched against the police officials involved in extrajudicial killings.”

According to the same report, between 1 January- 30 June 2010, 62 soldiers, 9 village guards, 72 militants, 3 civilians, 3 police officers and one private security guard in total 150 persons lost their lives in the clashes. In addition, during the same periods 10 persons also died due to land mines and unexploded ordnance.
