Italy arrests head of Kurdish association

It is reported that Italian police collaborating with the Italian intelligence service Digos arrested head of KON-KURD Nizamettin Toðuç in Padova near Venice on 18 July. Nizamettin Toðuç (58) is a Dutch citizen and reported to be arrested upon request from Turkey.

Regarding the arrest KON-KURD executive committee issued a press release and said Mr. Toðuç who is a well known politician was elected to the Turkish parliament in 1991 and had to leave the country due to pressure from Turkish state. He is the head of legal organisation representing the Kurds all over Europe since 2006.

KON-KURD further stated that Mr. Toðuç’s arrest has no legal basis and it is a result of Kurdophobia of Turkey and attempts to criminalise the Kurds. KON-KURD urged Italy to release Mr. Toðuç immediately.
