Zeynep Cansız, mother of Sakine Cansız, a Kurdish revolutionary who was murdered in Paris in 2013, was hospitalized. The 88-year-old woman, who lives in the western Turkish Aegean province of Izmir, was admitted to a state clinic on Saturday evening with a broken thigh-bone. According to relatives, her condition is serious.
Zeynep Cansız has diabetes, which can have a significant impact on the recovery process. The doctors treating her are currently preparing for surgery. The operation is scheduled to take place in the coming days, as soon as her circulation is stable enough.
Sakine Cansız “Sara”, co-founder of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and one of the most symbolic figures of the Kurdish women's movement, was shot dead in Paris on January 9, 2013, along with her companions Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez, by a contract killer working for the Turkish intelligence service MIT. To date, no one has been held accountable for the assassination. Despite clear evidence of MIT involvement, France is treating the case as a state secret.
