Remarks by mayor of Rice sparks protest

“A Mayor considering the Kurds and women as second class should not be a Mayor”. Co-chair of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Gültan Kýþanak commented on the racist and sexist statements of AKP’s Mayor of Rize Halil Bakýrcý and called the government and judiciary for their duty. “Otherwise we will have to teach this person where his place is. If AKP does not take necessary steps regarding this person and dismiss him then we will do what needed. Then AKP also will be responsible. For now I do not want to respond to this person” said Kýþanak.

Talking to ANKA said Co-chair of BDP Gültan Kýþanak reacted strictly against the statements of AKP’s Mayor of Rize (on the Black Sea coast) who said “It is very common to have a second wife in the south east. We have the same culture. I believe that if we increase the marriages between these regions then with the encouragement of the government we can solve the Kurdish problem.”

Racist, sexist, discriminatory, degrading

Calling the minister of state responsible for women rights and family Aliye Kavaf to her duty co-chair Kýþanak stated that “the statement of the Mayor of Rize is racist, discriminatory and degrading our people. It is not only racist but also insulting, humiliating the women. I am avoiding giving him an answer otherwise mine would be equally insulting. Therefore, I just return him what he said. AKP should dismiss him immediately. They should not leave it us to respond his statements. And if it will be the case then we will have to speak the language he understands.”

She further reminded that racism is criminal and called the prosecutors to start an investigation.

Minister of Interior should not stomach these words

Calling both the Minister of state responsible of Women rights Aliye Kavaf and Minister of Interior Bakaný Atalay to their duty Kýþanak also said that “If Ms. Kavaf has gender consciousness in the slightest degree then should make her party take the necessary steps. And Mr. Atalay should not stomach these statements. A mayor like this who considers the Kurds and the women as second class and using their identity and bodies as political arguments as well as insulting them keeps working he will poison the people in his town. He will make them racist and sexist. Such a person should not be able to represent the people.” She also asked the Mayor of Rize to take his words back and apologise publicly.
