Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a member of the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) İmralı Delegation and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, lost his life on May 3, on the 18th day of his treatment in the intensive care unit of an Istanbul hospital following a cardiac arrest on April 15.
Following a memorial service at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) at noon, the body of Sırrı Süreyya Önder was taken to the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Mosque in Şişli. Masses walked from the AKM to the mosque where a religious ceremony was held with the participation of thousands of people.
The crowd attending the religious ceremony at the mosque included DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, Pervin Buldan, a member of the Imrali Delegation, DEM Party MPs, Meral Danış Beştaş and Ali Kenanoğlu, Co-spokespersons of the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), politicians Ahmet Türk and Leyla Zana, Murat Çepni, Co-chair of the ESP (Socialist Party of the Oppresed), Hakan Öztürk, Chair of the EHP (Labor Movement Party), former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş’s wife Başak Demirtaş, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, CHP (Republican People’s Party) Chair Özgür Özel, CHP Diyarbakır MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu, former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, AKP (Justice and Development Party) Spokesperson Ömer Çelik, Chairman of the New Welfare Party Fatih Erbakan, AKP Group Chairman Abdullah Güler, and numerous representatives, officials, and chairpersons of political parties.
Other participants in the ceremony included Ahmet Kaya's wife Gülten Kaya, director Yılmaz Erdoğan, İbrahim Tatlıses, Mahsum Kırmızıgül, historian İhsan Eliaçık, and many actors, artists, writers, and journalists.
In accordance with Sırrı Süreyya Önder's will, İhsan Eliaçık led the funeral prayer.
Following the funeral prayer at the mosque, the crowd set off for Zincirlikuyu Cemetery for the burial.
At the request of his family, Önder was laid to rest in Istanbul. Thousands chanted “The messenger of peace is immortal” as he was laid to rest at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery. People laid flowers on the grave of the pro-Kurdish politician, whose funeral brought peoples together.
