The imprisoned former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Figen Yüksekdağ, calls for more responsibility in the Corona crisis: "In these difficult times, solidarity and fraternity must be strengthened," says the 49-year-old politician in a message she sent through her lawyers.
"We should all act together in a humanitarian mobilisation", says Yüksekdağ, who is imprisoned in Kandira prison in western Turkey. "There is a light in the darkness. Let us stand together, be in unity and be fraternal," says the message of Yüksekdağ calling for participation in the HDP's twin family campaign.
The campaign was initiated at the beginning of April in order to ensure the provision of care for people who need support during the Corona pandemic.
A few days ago, Selahattin Demirtaş, who until his arrest had held the office of the HDP's dual leadership based on gender parity until his arrest with Figen Yüksekdağ in late 2016, also called for participation in the campaign so that weaker members of the population can survive the economic crisis.
Who is Figen Yüksekdağ?
Figen Yüksekdağ is a co-founder of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (Ezilenlerin Sosyalist Partisi, ESP) and was its leader until September 2014. Following her resignation, she joined the HDP. That same year, ESP joined the HDP, which acts as the umbrella party for several small parties. At the second HDP congress, Figen Yüksekdağ was elected co-chair on 22 June 2014. At the same time as Selahattin Demirtaş and numerous other HDP MPs, she was arrested at the instigation of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 4 November 2016.
