People’s Municipality: Making Raqqa a live and vibrant center

The efforts by the municipality can be seen throughout the city which has been turned into a liveable and better space from the wreck and debris it had been reduced by DAESH and war.

The People's Municipality was established immediately after the liberation of Raqqa under the leadership of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The city had been destroyed by barbaric practices carried out by DAESH which had declared Raqqa the Caliphate’s capital.

The heaviest damages have been to services and the People’s Municipality had been working since its establishment to rebuild them.

The efforts by the municipality can be seen throughout the city which has been turned into a liveable and better space from the wreck and debris it had been reduced by DAESH and war.

Many main services such as the infrastructure of the city have been the first to be re-established by the municipality which in the past two months has intensified cleaning activities, including re-paving the main streets of the city, in preparations for the winter months.

Transport Committee

The Transport Committee of the Raqqa Civil Council has bought 10 new minibus, thus increasing the number of minibus to 23 in the whole city.

The committee is also repairing the main terminal of the city, al-Bolman, together with the terminal at Baghdad Gate, thus re-establishing an important service. The committee continues to appoint licenses to drivers in the city.

In addition to all these activities, the Committee has programmed many projects for 2019 as well. According to these projects, a taxi terminal will be built in the city.

Furthermore, the only international terminal construction of the region is under way.

Environment and Park Committee

After completing the repair of al-Resid, al-Bustan and children's parks in the city, the committee started to repair the al-Istiqlal and al-Beyda parks.

Water Committee

The committee continues to repair water and sewer lines in the city, which had been severely damaged by the DAESH mercenaries.

A recent study revealed that 75 percent of the city's water and sewer lines have been completed. Furthermore, works continue in the neighbourhoods of al-Bedo, al-Idixar, Basil, al-Nehda and al-Firat.

Cleaning

Raqqa Public Municipality, with the support of the Raqqa Civic Council, launched a cleaning initiative on 10 June 2018 with a budget of 465 thousand dollars to clear the city from the war wreck.

The municipality, which completes all school districts as well as the main street and its clearance works, carried the debris and rubbish from the city to dump sites previously established.

Beginning with the cleaning project, 70 percent of the neighbourhoods have been cleared of war debris.

Raqqa People's Municipality President, Ehmed al-Ibrahim, told ANHA that they continue their services despite all obstacles and limited facilities.

He added that the Municipality has new projects for 2019 to secure the city will look better and services will meet the needs of citizens.
