Afrin refugees fight embargo by collecting harvest leftovers

Women refugees from Afrin, devoted to the resistance and her land, earn their living by collecting leftovers from harvests such as potatoes and onions, against the embargo imposed by the Damascus government and the attacks by the Turkish army.

The displaced people of Afrin are resisting all the difficult conditions imposed on them by the invading Turkish state and the Damascus government in order to return to their homes.

The Damascus government's 4th Brigade has further aggravated the embargo on Shehba Canton since August 2022. In these harsh winter conditions, difficult living conditions and the absence of the most basic needs to sustain life are prevented from entering basic materials such as fuel, medicine and food.

A refugee woman from Afrin earns her living by collecting harvest leftovers such as potatoes and onions.

At the same time, the Turkish state attacks the Sherawa and Shera districts and cantonal regions of the occupied Afrin Canton every day.

Since 2018, refugees continue to live in camps and half-destroyed houses. The gardens where the citizens gathered the rest of the harvest were also occupied by the Turkish state and its mercenaries. Like the village of Herbel, which is very close to these areas and is bombarded with heavy weapons every day. However, women collect the remnants of the harvest there with their children.

Henîfe Elî, a refugee from the village of Beradê in Sherawa, lives in Serdem Camp after the Turkish state invaded Afrin in 2018.

Speaking to ANHA while she was washing the potatoes she collected with cold water, Henîfe Eli said: “Our situation is very bad. We missed our land, our olive trees and our city Afrin. My hope is to return to Afrin soon.”

Henîfe continued: “I went to collect the leftovers from the fields, I am cleaning what I have gathered. Due to the lack of food, fuel and gas, we make a living from what we manage to find.”

Henîfe emphasized that they will resist until they return to their homes.
