Almost 1800 coronavirus cases registered in northeast Syria

In Northern and Eastern Syria there are now over 1800 coronavirus infections. The number of people who have died of the virus disease is 68.

In the self-governing areas of northern and eastern Syria, 80 new infections with the coronavirus have been reported in the past 24 hours. This was announced by the health committee of the autonomous administration on Saturday in Qamishlo. This brought the number of infected persons to 1,791, of whom 476 have recovered. The number of people who have died after infection is now 68.

Most new infections were found in Raqqa with 49 cases, followed by Manbij (10), Qamishlo (7), Tabqa (6), Kobanê (5) and Amûdê with three cases. Local outbreaks and infections now occur in almost all regions.

In the fight against pandemic, northern and eastern Syria is apparently entering a phase of increased infection. Thanks to early contact restrictions, the autonomous regions initially had the pandemic well under control - largely closed borders and strict quarantine conditions successfully kept the virus at bay for months - but since the end of July the pathogen has been spreading daily. Particularly in regions bordering on regime areas, more and more new infections are occurring.
