Berxbotan massacre protested across Europe

Kurdish communities and their allies took to the streets in various cities across Europe to protest the massacre committed by the occupying Turkish state in the village of Berxbotan, Kobanê.

After the Turkish state killed nine members of the same family, including seven children, in a drone and heavy weapons attack on Berxbotan village in Kobanê in the early hours of March 17, Kurds and their allies mobilized in numerous cities across Europe.

Hamburg

In the German city of Hamburg, a crowd gathered in front of Sternschanze Bahnhof to raise their voices against the massacre in Kobanê.

During the demonstration, protesters chanted slogans such as 'Kobanê did not fall and will never fall,' 'Kurdistan will be the grave of fascism,' and 'Bijî berxwedana Kobanê' (Long live the resistance of Kobanê). A press statement was then read aloud.

The statement emphasized that while the Kurdish people seek peace and stability in the Middle East, the Turkish state continues escalating its attacks. It included the following remarks: "We are outraged by this massacre. As the Kurdish people, we stand for peace, yet the Turkish state insists on war. These attacks target the achievements in Kobanê and all of Kurdistan. Everyone must understand this: The West was liberated with the blood of our heroic martyrs, and we will never abandon it. Kobanê has survived through the resistance of our people and will stand strong forever."

Following the statement, demonstrators observed a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs of Kobanê.

The demonstration in Hamburg concluded with a message of strengthening resistance against the attacks on Kobanê, as Kurds and their allies vowed to continue the struggle.

Lausanne

In the Swiss city of Lausanne, Kurds gathered at St. Laurent Square in response to the emergency action call by the Kurdish Democratic Society Congress in Europe (KCDK-E). The protest was led by the Lausanne Democratic Kurdish Community Center (CDK-Lausanne) and the Lajîn Women’s Council to condemn the Turkish state’s massacre in Kobanê.

A minute of silence was observed in memory of the mother, father, and seven children who were massacred in Kobanê. Following this, CDK-Lausanne Co-Chair Musa İtah delivered a speech.

İtah highlighted the long history of oppression faced by the Kurdish people and stated, "Since the time of Dehak, the oppressed Kurdish people have been subjected to genocidal attacks dozens of times." Today, an attack has been carried out against the Kurdish people’s aspirations for a free and democratic life, where they coexist with the peoples and faiths of the region. In this attack, an entire family was massacred."

İtah likened the attack to the Ba’ath regime’s chemical assault on Halabja 37 years ago, saying, "These attacks, indiscriminately targeting children, women, young people, and the elderly, are a continuation of the Halabja massacre. Just as the dictators and Dehaks of the past were cast into the dustbin of history, today’s dictators will meet the same fate."

Lausanne Deputy Mayor David Payot also condemned the massacre and stated:

"These attacks against the Kurdish people, who stand for peace, equality, and democracy, are unacceptable. Through their struggle for peace and democracy in the Middle East, the Kurdish people have become a beacon of hope for all oppressed communities. We stand in solidarity with their struggle for peace and democracy."

After the speeches, a press statement was read in French, and the demonstration concluded with slogans.

Geneva

One of the protest sites in Switzerland was Geneva, where a demonstration took place at Mont Blanc Square. Speaking on behalf of the Geneva Democratic Kurdish Community Center (CDK-Ge), Yekbûn Güneş condemned the attack.

Güneş stated that the Turkish state continues its attacks and massacres against the Kurdish people, adding: "We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Kobanê, where nine civilians were massacred. This massacre is part of a policy aimed at intimidating peoples and breaking their will. However, it must be known that such massacres will never crush the people’s will for freedom and resistance. We call on the international community and human rights organizations to take action against the Turkish state’s genocidal attacks on the Kurdish people and to put an end to these atrocities. We expect them to break their silence and take a clear stance against these inhumane attacks targeting civilians in the region. Finally, we honor with deep respect all the fallen fighters and civilians who have lost their lives due to the attacks of the occupying Turkish state and its mercenaries."

Following the statement, the demonstration ended with slogans.

Saarbrücken

Kurdistanis living in the German city of Saarbrücken took to the streets to condemn the massacre carried out by the occupying Turkish state in Kobanê.

During the demonstration, speakers highlighted the hypocrisy of the Turkish state, which claims to advocate for peace and democracy while simultaneously continuing its genocidal attacks against the Kurdish people. It was emphasized that such actions are tantamount to sabotaging the peace process.

Protesters called on both national and international institutions to take a stand against the Turkish state’s crimes against humanity and war crimes. The demonstration concluded with chants and slogans.

Frankfurt

In the German city of Frankfurt, a protest was organized under the leadership of the Democratic Kurdish Community Center.

Speakers emphasized that nine civilians from the same family were massacred in the attack and called on the international community to take action.

Throughout the demonstration, messages of unity and solidarity were delivered in response to the ongoing attacks against the Kurdish people.
