Call for action against Turkey lowering water level of Euphrates

Opinion leaders condemning Turkey lowering water level of Euphrates River called on the Arab League, European Union and international community to stop the crimes of the Turkish state.

The Turkish state continues committing crime against people in North and East Syria. Lowering the water level of Euphrates River is only one of these crimes. The Turkish state uses the water of Euphrates as a weapon against the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Outage of the water leaves the people in the region deprived of drinking water, causes damages for the cultivated lands and interrupts the supply of power. The Turkish state violates international criterions regulated by the agreement signed with Syrian government in 1987, which guaranteed 500 cubic meters of water per second. These crimes of the Turkish state continue to be object of reactions.

Sabit El-Hemede, an opinion leader from El-Şiêtat tribe in Ebu Hema province, called on international community and human right organisations to stop the Turkish state using the water as a weapon.

‘THE TURKISH STATE COMMITS A CRIME’

El-Hemede stated that the water decreased to a critical level on consequence of the Turkish state’s interference and both cultivated lands and animals suffer damages because of the water rendered non-potable. He expressed that they seek for peace and reject the war, adding, “The Turkish state resorts to all vicious ways to eliminate the freedom and security in the region. It commits crime against North and East Syria people.” El-Hemede called on international public opinion to immediately resolve these problems and stop the Turkish state committing crime.

‘THEY USE WATER AS A WEAPON’

In the same context, Selah Reşîd, an opinion leader from El Selman tribe in Hajin city, said, “The Turkish state previously implemented similar vicious policies against both the people in this region and neighbour countries Syria and Iraq. Now, it uses water as a weapon in order to clamp down the countries in the region in terms of economy."

Reşîd asserted that 90 percent of people in Syria and Iraq earn their lives by agriculture and cultivation and lowering the water of Euphrates River causes serious damages in the region.

CALL UPON THE ARAB LEAGUE

Reşîd expressed that drinking water and watering stations are out of service and therefore, endangering the lives of citizens. He also pointed out that Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor benefit from the Euphrates River, for which reason farmers in these regions are negatively affected by this situation.

Reşîd, addressing the international community and the Arab League, demanded solution for this problem which affects the lives of millions of people.
