Embargo on Shehba gets harder as winter nears
The embargo imposed by the Damascus government on Shehba Canton for the past three years becomes even harder with the arrival of the winter season.
The embargo imposed by the Damascus government on Shehba Canton for the past three years becomes even harder with the arrival of the winter season.
After Afrin was occupied by the Turkish state on 18 March 2018, thousands of people were forced to migrate to Shehba. The government of Damascus has hardened the embargo with the arrival of the winter season.
The Damascus government, which prevented the passage of food and health supplies to the region as well as winter needs, did not allow the passage of the educational materials prepared by the Autonomous Administration to the Shehba region after the ENKS's proposal to switch to the education system of the Damascus government in the Autonomous Administration regions. This situation also raised the suspicion that ENKS had a relationship with the Damascus government aimed at disqualifying talks about Kurdish unity.
The people of Afrin staying in Shehba said that they had difficulties in meeting their basic needs, but added that they would overcome this difficult process in solidarity with the Autonomous Administration.
Ebdo Îso said: “The government does not allow food and fuel reaching the canton. The Afrin Canton Council distributes free fuel to the people, despite the limited means. I condemn this policy of the Damascus government towards the people of Afrin in Shehba.”
Selahdîn Bîlal, who is staying in Berxwedan Camp in Fafîn, said: “I condemn the policy implemented by the Damascus government against the refugees from Afrin who continue their lives in camps and ruined houses. The government blocked all roads coming to Shehba and confiscated the aid intended to be sent here. The occupying Turkish state and its mercenaries forced us out of our lands. The government of Damascus also imposes an embargo on us."
Adding that the Damascus government is trying to cause strife between the Autonomous Administration and the people, Bîlal said: "We trust the Autonomous Administration. Our resistance continues in the camps in Shehba. We will resist until we return to Afrin despite all the difficulties we are going through."
Fîdan Ico stated that the difficulties they faced increased due to the embargo imposed and that they had difficulties in meeting their health and basic needs.
