The agreement signed on March 10, 2025, between SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi and Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has been widely covered in the international media. It contains concrete provisions for the future of Syria, including fundamental rights and freedoms for Kurds and all Syrians. Previously, no delegates from the DAANES (Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria) and other Syrian opposition groups had been included in the incipient national dialogue.
Ferhad Shami, spokesperson of the Press Liaison Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), commented on the recent agreement to the press.
No troops from Damascus in Hesekê
Ferhad Shami explained that the agreement was an important and positive step and that it had been brokered by the USA as a guarantor power. He added that it was possible that troops from Damascus would be deployed in border areas, but denied claims of direct deployment in Hesekê.
Committees to develop solutions
At the political level, various special committees are to deal with the implementation of individual aspects of the agreement in the future, thus guaranteeing compliance. For example, the committee responsible for the administration of the education sector will be responsible for ensuring that instruction is provided in the Kurdish language.
ISIS prisoners remain under the control of the SDF
The future of prisons with imprisoned members of ISIS is also one of the problems for which a separate committee is to work out solutions. Ferhad Shami addressed concerns regarding the ISIS terrorists imprisoned in northern and eastern Syria and made it clear that there would be no changes to the situation. He said that the prisoners will remain under the control of the SDF and will not be handed over to the interim government.
“The main goal is to end the war"
In the last few days, the Turkish army has intensified its attacks on northern and eastern Syria. Ferhad Shami said: “Turkey has concentrated its forces at the Tishrin Dam and around the Qereqozax Bridge in the last two days. However, our main goal is to end the war. Our goal is also to ensure the return of the people of Afrin and Girê Spî to their land and to prevent demographic change.”
