In Shehba, a desert-like region in northern Syria, where many people from Afrin sought shelter after the Turkish invasion and live in self-governing camps, displaced people have initiated a fundraising campaign for the inhabitants of the Washokani camp.
Despite their own difficult situation, 1,644,500 Syrian Liras (around 3,500 euros) were collected for the displaced people from the Turkish occupation zones Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain) and Girê Spî (Tal Abyad), who are accommodated in the camp twelve kilometres west of Hesekê. A small drop in the ocean, but with great effect. Especially against the background that hardly any international aid for refugees and internally displaced persons is arriving in northern Syria. Only a few organisations such as the German NGOs Cadus in Berlin or medico international from Frankfurt regularly support the displaced persons.
All the greater was the joy at the Washokani camp about the donation from Shehba. Ferhan Dawud, co-chairman of the Movement for a Democratic Society (Tevgera Civaka Demokratîk, TEV-DEM) in the canton of Hesekê and Faruq Tozo from the TEV-DEM executive committee handed over the donation to the management of the camp, which is now home to more than 8,000 people.
