In northern Syria, internal security forces have arrested a suspected smuggler of antiques. The man was in possession of an antique prayer book with gilt edges and antique coins. However, the age of the items has yet to be determined.

The suspect was caught during a special operation in the town of Tirbespiyê (al-Qahtaniyya) in the canton of Qamishlo. According to the security forces, the confiscated antiques were found during illegal excavations. Probably they were meant to be sold to collectors. The arrested man has been handed over to the relevant authorities.

Most recently, in February, the internal security forces of northern and eastern Syria succeeded in breaking up a network of smugglers of antique objects. During the operation, three holy scriptures including a Torah written in Hebrew as well as seals and tools thousands of years old were discovered.
