In the Sakan al-Shababi neighborhood east of Aleppo in northern Syria, a mass grave containing the bones of nine people has been discovered. The grave was found by chance during road construction work by the People's Municipality and is the second known site of a massacre in the area. It is believed that the dead are local residents of the neighborhood who were murdered by jihadists between 2012 and 2016 during the Battle of Aleppo. Sakan al-Shababi was liberated by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in February 2016.
It is said that the bones will now undergo genetic analysis in a laboratory in Aleppo and then be matched with a gene database of people who are searching for their missing relatives.
A first mass grave near Sakan al-Shababi was found in August 2018 during restoration work at Istikama Park. The victims were civilians who had been killed by Islamist mercenaries - who most media continue to euphemistically refer to as rebels.
