Thousands demonstrate in Derik against Turkish attacks

In Derik in Northern Syria, thousands of people have protested against the Turkish state's occupation attacks on Southern Kurdistan.

In the northern Syrian city of Derik, thousands of people protested against the Turkish invasion in Southern Kurdistan. The demonstration was the first of a series of actions in Northeast Syria called by the Council of the Martyrs’ Families. People also took to the streets in Amude, and further demonstrations are planned in other cities next week.

The background is the invasion of Turkey in Southern Kurdistan which started on Monday. With the de facto approval of the international states, the Turkish air force bombed the area around the Maxmur refugee camp, the Yazidi settlement Shengal and guerrilla areas. On Wednesday, the military action, which violates international law, was extended by an air and ground invasion in the region of Heftanin. In Rojava, too, there are increasing signs of an expansion of the occupation attacks.

The demonstration in Derik continued from the Freedom Square to the Square of Martyrs. The front banner showed pictures of the civilians killed in Turkish air raids in Southern Kurdistan on Friday. At the closing rally, Ibrahim Feqe from the Board of the Council of Martyrs’ Families said: "The Turkish state has not been able to break the will of the Kurdish people to defend their freedom, dignity, language and identity until today. It will not succeed in the future either."

On behalf of the Young Women's Association, Azi Berçem made a speech and said: "The Turkish state and its gangs are carrying out barbaric attacks on Southern Kurdistan and Rojava. In the face of these attacks, we must strengthen our unity. As young women, we have the right to lead the resistance against the occupying forces.”
