According to reports from local sources, three more civilians were abducted by the occupying forces in Afrin. A mercenary force declared as "military police" and commanded by the Turkish intelligence service MIT abducted 28-year-old Mistefa Mihemed from the village of Dêr Siwanê in Shera district, as well as Mehmûd Elî Hisên (30) and Ferzat Ehmed Mehmûd (28) from the village of Çûbono in district district. The abductees were taken to an unknown location.
Most of the time, the abductees end up in the torture cellars of the MIT or in the detention centres of the mercenaries and are released for ransom. However, some are also abducted to Turkey in violation of international law, die under torture or are deliberately executed.
According to the Human Rights Organisation Afrin-Syria, 346 people were abducted by the occupying forces and their mercenary militias in the first half of 2022. Among them are 30 women. At least 18 people were murdered in the first half of the year.
Since the occupation of Afrin on 18 March 2018, a regime of terror has ruled the previously grassroots self-governing canton. The human rights organisation has since documented over 600 killings of civilians and more than 8000 abductions. About half of those abducted have disappeared to date, while others continue to be held in torture centres.
