The conference hall of the Maison du Peuple (People’s House) has been named after Jina Amini, who was murdered in 2022 after being detained by Iran's morality police in Tehran.
Two other halls were named after Marielle Franco, a Brazilian women's rights activist, politician, and sociologist who was assassinated in 2018, and Liliane Valceschini, a trade unionist, women's rights activist, and organizer of the 1991 Swiss Women's Strike.
The opening speech at the ceremony for the naming of the halls was delivered by Sevgi Koyuncu, a member of the Lausanne Municipal Council and co-chair of the Ensemble à Gauche (United Left) Party. Koyuncu, who is also a member of the Lausanne Lajîn Women's Council, spoke about the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" (Women, Life, Freedom) uprisings that began after Jina Amini’s murder and their impact in Iran and globally.
Koyuncu said that the Kurdish women's 40-year struggle, along with the women's resistance in Rojava, has given life to the slogan "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî".
Koyuncu also spoke about the resistance of Kurdish women activists Warisha Muradi and Pakhshan Azizi, who have been sentenced to death by the Iranian state, as well as Soma Pur Mohammadi, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for teaching Kurdish. She concluded her speech by chanting, "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî."
