On Sunday, the exhibition “Jin Jiyan Azadi – Achievements of the Women’s Revolution” was opened in a festive ceremony at the Mehrgenerationenhaus in Celle, Germany. Dozens of people were invited to the opening by the feminist organization “Gemeinsam kämpfen: Für Selbstbestimmung und demokratische Autonomie” (Fighting Together: For Self-Determination and Democratic Autonomy), the Mehrgenerationenhaus, the umbrella organization of the Yazidi Women’s Councils (SMJÊ), the Women Defend Rojava campaign and the Rosa Luxemburg Club Celle. The exhibition will be on display until March 31, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays.
Hevi Youssev and Adnan Horo opened the afternoon with Kurdish music, setting the mood for the rest of the program. Birthe Witthöft and Kordula Sommer welcomed the audience, a large part of whom had arrived before the official start to catch a glimpse of the large exhibition panels hanging in two rooms.
The preview took place as part of the program for International Women's Day on March 8. Women's rights activist and freelance journalist Nele Möhlmann attended the opening as a speaker. The activist, who spent the year 2024 in northern and eastern Syria until Assad's overthrow last December, reported on her experiences there, focusing on the achievements of local women. The journalist stated that it is thanks to women’s strength that peaceful coexistence has been able to develop in this multi-ethnic region. However, the region is under daily attack from various forces – especially the Turkish army – and people are injured or killed every day.
Participants were also able to talk to the Foundation of Free Women in Syria (WJAS), which designed the exhibition together with the Women Defend Rojava campaign and the women's movement in North and East Syria, Kongra Star. The chair of the foundation, Sultan Xişo, was connected live online from Qamishlo in northeastern Syria. The topics were wide-ranging, with the audience asking about, among other things, Abdullah Öcalan’s latest ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ and its impact on Syria, the foundation's projects, and the health, economic, and legal situation of women in the region.
