Kurdish Women Parliamentarians Conference: National unity is the cornerstone of the process

Speaking at the 1st Kurdish Women Parliamentarians Conference, Gültan Kışanak said, “We must work together on a solution that includes women. National unity is the cornerstone of this resolution process.”

The 1st Kurdish Women Parliamentarians Conference, organized by the Free Women's Movement (TJA) under the slogan “Let's democratize politics, let's build a democratic society,” continues in Amed (tr: Diyarbakır).

Speaking at the second session moderated by Beritan Güneş, the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) MP for Mardin, politician Gültan Kışanak recalled the inhumane practices perpetrated in Diyarbakır Prison No. 5 and said: "We struggled to defend our existence and identity. As women, we struggled to protect our honor. There was not a single female staff member in the military prison. The windows of the cells we were held in had no curtains, and it was forbidden to close them. There were gratings on the walls. We fought to protect our honor and existence under the constant surveillance of soldiers for 24 hours a day. You all know Sakine Cansız. She was our comrade, the most resilient woman in the Amed prison. The Kurdish women's movement took shape within this resistance.”

Kışanak continued: “We paved the way for women in politics not only by fighting state oppression, but also by fighting the male mindset. If women had not been so excluded from politics, perhaps the world would be a better place today. Perhaps our problems would not be so severe. We women must work together on a solution. National unity is the cornerstone of this resolution process. If we can achieve national unity, we can successfully move forward with this process. We women must play a role in this. Mr. Öcalan has done his part by calling for peace and a democratic society. Now it is time for us to work together to make this a reality.”

Nasîk Tewfîq, MP for Yekgirtiya Îslamî, said, “If we fail to seize the opportunities presented by the changes taking place in the Middle East, our burden will become even heavier.” She stressed that Kurds in the four parts of Kurdistan must support each other in order to achieve success.

Goran Party MP Münire Osman said, "There are very important developments taking place in the Middle East. How will we play a role in these developments, how will we evaluate the opportunities, how will we secure our rights in the four parts of Kurdistan? These developments in the Middle East present very important opportunities. I hope that Kurds will achieve their rights and freedoms. We must defend national unity. We must defend our rights for freedom."

Rîham Hico from the Yazidi Free Women's Movement participated in the conference via Zoom and said: "The Yazidis attach great importance to the peace process that has begun. They want to play a role in this process. However, there are obstacles and problems. There is an embargo against the Yazidis. But today, a peace process, a resolution process, has begun. The embargo on Shengal is preventing us from carrying out our work properly. In this regard, we are unable to adequately fulfill the role that Leader Abdullah Öcalan has given to the Yazidis. The obstacles must be removed."

The second session ended with a question-and-answer session.
