Women prisoners in Evin Prison start a protest

Women prisoners in Evin Women's Prison in Tehran, notorious for torture, announced that they will support the general strike on the second anniversary of the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadi’ uprising with a hunger strike.

Women prisoners in Evin Women's Prison gathered in the yard on the night of 14 September on the occasion of the second anniversary of the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom) uprising that followed the murder of the Kurdish young woman Jina Mahsa Amini by the morality police in Tehran on 16 September 2022.

Women prisoners took off and burned their headscarves and shouted slogans. The action was shared on the digital media account of imprisoned activist Narges Mohammadi, winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.

The statement read as follows:

"More than 25 women political prisoners gathered in the yard of Evin Prison on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the ‘Jin Jiyan Azadî’ protests, which started with the murder of Jina Emînî, wrote slogans on banners and hung them on the walls of the prison. They chanted ‘Jin Jiyan Azadî’ in the corridor and courtyard of the prison and read the names of those who were killed and executed during the protests. Women prisoners took off their headscarves and burnt them in the prison yard in order to condemn the imposition of headscarves on women. The resisting women will start a hunger strike on Sunday in support of the general strike launched by the Iranian people."
