The transport of refugees to the EU's external borders, which was arranged by the Turkish state after the losses in Idlib, continues. From Istanbul, people continue to be transported to Edirne by taxi, bus and train. Thousands of people have been transported to the Turkish border crossing at Pazarkule. The Greek border crossing Kastanies has been closed to pedestrians and vehicles by soldiers. Hundreds of people are waiting in the buffer zone.
The Pazarkule border crossing in Edirne, which was closed in the morning, has been reopened at noon. The Turkish military police cleared the barriers and let the refugees through again. As a result, numerous people waiting in the surrounding area have again made their way to Pazarkule.
On the Greek side, the border crossing had been closed by soldiers with buses two days ago. Yesterday morning the barbed wire was pulled. There have been clashes between the crowds- including women and children waiting in the area in front of the Pazarkule border crossing and behind the barbed wire- and the Greek military units, in which tear gas was used against the refugees.
The Turkish Minister of the Interior, Süleyman Soylu, had announced on Sunday morning via Twitter that 76,359 people had crossed the border via Edirne province. This statement was not confirmed by either Greece or Bulgaria. Greece's Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos accused Turkey of having organised the influx of migrants at the common border. At Greece's request, the EU border protection agency Frontex has sent reinforcements to Greece. At the same time, the alert level for all EU borders with Turkey was set to "high". According to its own information, Frontex has almost 400 employees on the Greek islands and 60 more in Bulgaria.
