According to the latest official data, the deaths in China total 3,169, while the number of infected detected so far reaches 80,793 people.

China has overcome the peak of transmission of Covid-19, a spokesman for the Asian National Health Commission announced Thursday.

The spokesman talked to state agency Xinhua and said the new cases of contagion of the coronavirus in China totaled 15 positives in the last 24 hours, compared to the 24 recorded the previous day.

Eight of the new infections have occurred in Wuhan City, considered the epicenter of the epidemic, the lowest number since it began.

"Generally speaking, the peak of the epidemic has passed for China," said Mi Feng, spokesman for the National Health Commission. "The increase in new cases is falling."

Trump suspended most travel from EU

US President Donald Trump has announced that the US would temporarily suspend most travel from the European Union, as the country reckons with the spread of coronavirus and the White House grapples with the severity of the situation.

The restrictions, which would begin on Friday and last for 30 days, would not apply to US citizens or to travelers from the UK.

The restrictions apply to most foreign nationals who have been in the 26 countries of the Schengen area during the 14 days before their planned arrival in the US.
