Against the background of reports on medical and humanitarian aid in the context of Covid-19 in Idlib, physician Michael Wilk from Wiesbaden has written to the Development Minister Müller (CSU) asking to what extent the Federal Government plans to support the self-governing areas in Northern and Eastern Syria for pandemic prevention and is prepared to contact aid organisations.
In his letter to the ministry, Wilk offered to mediate and establish contacts with the autonomous administration of Rojava and Heyva Sor a Kurd, the Kurdish Red Crescent, and described the excellent work of the organisation as well as the precarious situation especially in the refugee camps after the Turkish invasion.
The federal government declared that it would finance the salaries of 850 doctors, nurses and other people in the health sector in Idlib. The ministry makes no mention of the self-governing areas in northern Syria.
The help for the health care in Idlib is to be welcomed, but it is obvious that the lack of help for North-East Syria and Rojava is partly due to consideration of Turkish interests. The German Federal Government had previously granted funding for the militia "Free Syrian Police" in Idlib.
