Italian former Prime Minister and Socialist International Co-Chair Massimo D’Alema stated that he stands by the conversation of Turkish government with PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
Speaking to Roj Tv Analysis Program during the meeting of Socialist International in Paris, Massimo D’Alema recorded that the Kurdish problem can be solved only through political dialogue.
Massimo D’Alema remarked that he gave a favorable opinion on the talks with PKK Leader Öcalan in Ýmralý, saying; “I hear that talks are progressing positively. I think the meetings are positive in any case. Moreover, a solution can be reached only through political dialogue and negotiations. All that I know is that the representatives of Kurdistan and the government representatives of Turkey should came together and talk. It is good that conversations are held with Öcalan.”
D’Alema remarked that they have expectations and demands from Turkish government concerning the Kurd and Kurdistan subject and recorded that necessary steps should be taken particularly on human rights ground. D’Alema pointed out that this is the demand of European Union as well, not only Socialist International’s.
Remarking that the Socialist International is in solidarity with Kurdish people, D’Alema said; “I want to confirm that. The main human rights and nation rights are in on the basis of this solidarity of us”.
D’Alema pointed out that discussions were held in the meeting of Socialist International about how the existing clashes in various parts of the world could be prevented.
Massimo D'Alema was prime minister when Abdullah Ocalan arrived in Italy in November 2008.
