Greens MP: Isolation is a human rights violation

Berivan Aymaz from Germany’s Greens said they as a party are concerned that there are thousands of people on hunger strikes and stressed that isolation is a human rights violation.

Berivan Aymaz, Union 90/Greens Party Member of Nordrhein-Westfalen State Parliament, visited the hunger strikers in Strasbourg together with Turkey-Germany Human Rights Association (TUDAY) members. Aymaz received information on the hunger strikers’ demands and health conditions, and met with HDP MP Nuran Imir.

MSP Berivan Aymaz gave a speech during the visit and said they consider the demands legitimate and that they are concerned for the thousands of participants and the possible losses that could occur.

Aymaz said she visited Amed along with a Federal MP from her party in late March and met with Leyla Guven, who has been on a hunger strike for 180 days.

Aymaz said the Greens is following the ongoing hunger strikes closely and added: “As the Greens, we do consider hunger strikes to be a form of political action, and we know that the demands of hunger strikers are legitimate.”

“Isolation is a human rights violation,” said Berivan Aymaz and stressed that they favor a peaceful solution being reached as soon as possible regardin the Kurdish issue.

THOUSANDS BEING ON HUNGER STRIKE IS “CONCERNING”

Aymaz said there are thousands of people on hunger strikes in prisons in Turkey and said: “The thousands of hunger strikers in Turkey and the activists in Strasbourg on hunger strikes of course gives us concern.”

“TURKISH GOVERNMENT MUST STOP IGNORING”

“The Turkish government must stop ignoring this protest in order for the hunger strikes to end without anybody getting harmed,” said Berivan Aymaz and stressed that the path to dialogue must be opened for the peaceful solution of the Kurdish issue.

Aymaz concluded with: “A path to dialogue must be opened. We have taken action to help open a path to dialogue, for the peaceful solution of the Kurdish issue and to ensure people do not come to harm in the coming period. That is the reason for my visit today as well.”
