Güroymak and Gökçebağ municipalities seized by the AKP - UPDATED

The AK regime continues its political genocide campaign against the Kurdish people and their elected representatives while the entire world has mobilized to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The municipality of Güroymak (Norşên) district in Bitlis province has been seized by the AKP government on Monday. Turkish Ministry of Interior has appointed the district governor, Muhammet Furkan Sancaktutar, trustee to replace the democratically elected co-mayors Hikmet Taşdemir and Dilek Ozan. The municipality building is besieged by the police.

The municipality of the Gökçebağ town in Siirt province was also seized by the government and HDP mayor Serhat Çiçek was taken into custody. Kurtalan district governor İhsan Emre Aydın has been appointed trustee to the municipality.

Before Güroymak and Gökçebağ, the municipalities of Batman, Silvan, Lice, Eğil and Ergani have been seized by the government earlier today. The co-mayors of these municipalities were deposed and replaced by trustees while some of them were taken into custody.

In the local elections of 31 March 2019, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) won a total of 65 municipalities, including three metropolises, 5 provinces, 45 districts and 12 towns.

The mayors elected to 6 of these were denied mandate by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) and the AKP candidates that lost the elections were appointed in their places.

With the latest operations, the AKP regime has seized 3 metropolitan, 2 city, 31 district and 3 town municipalities from the HDP which now runs only 21 municipalities.

In the meantime, co-mayor of Amed’s Lice district, Tarık Mercan, has been taken into custody today following the seizure of the municipality.
