Libya crisis: 15 Turkish-backed mercenaries captured

According to the Libyan National Army (LNA), 15 mercenaries from Syria sent by Turkey to Libya have been captured.

According to the Libyan National Army (LNA) under General Khalifa Haftar, more Turkish-backed mercenaries from Syria have been captured in Libya. The capture of Turkey’s proxies was announced by Brigadier General Halid al-Mahcup in a statement on the fighting in the region.

According to this statement, militiamen from the government in Tripoli kidnapped a group of civilians a few days ago. According to al-Mahcup, the militiamen suffered heavy losses when attempting to take the town of Tarhuna. The brigadier general said that the LNA had advanced further in skirmishes in Kereboli on Wednesday. Abdulrauf al-Sari, a high-ranking member of the "Selitan" group, was killed. In addition, 15 militiamen from Syria were captured during the operation.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on 20th April that 199 Turkish-backed jihadists have been killed in Libya to date. According to the SOHR, the Turkish regime has sent almost 5,300 mercenaries to Tripoli, and another 2,100 jihadists are being prepared in Turkey for deployment in Libya.

Libya has been in chaos since the fall of Muammar al-Gaddafi due to the bloody NATO intervention in 2011. At present there are in fact two governments: The "Government of National Accord" in Tripoli is mainly supported by the Turkish state and consists mainly of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. Turkey is openly violating the arms embargo imposed by the UN Security Council and has sent thousands of mercenaries trained in Syria and Southern Kurdistan to Tripoli in addition to the support of weapons, ammunition, armoured vehicles and drones.

The parallel government has been established in the east of the country and is under the control of the forces of General Khalifa Haftar, who in turn are supported primarily by the United Arab Emirates and Russia.

All previous attempts at mediation between the two governments have failed.
