Newroz celebrations canceled over Coronavirus threat

The political parties and organisations under the Kurdistan Alliance have announced the cancelation of Newroz celebrations over the Coronavirus threat.

Representatives of Democratic Society Congress (DTK), Free Women’s Movement (TJA), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Azadî Party, Revolutionary Democratic Kurdish Association (DDKD), Human and Freedom Party (PİYA), Kurdistan Communist Party (KKP) and North Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP-Bakur) held a press conference on the Newroz celebrations set to take place on March 21.

During the press conference held on Thursday, the Kurdish representatives announced the cancelation of Newroz celebrations over the Coronavirus (Covid-19) threat.

The press statement said that international and massive participation in the celebrations to mark Kurdish New Year Newroz will naturally pose a risk for the health of the people and international community with the rapidly spreading Coronavirus.

The statement said; “It was indeed difficult to make the decision to cancel the events to mark the Newroz feast which has been raised with great sacrifices and struggles and would never be renounced under any circumstance but we consider it a human, moral and political obligation to give this decision with the awareness and responsibility that the health of our people and all humanity is much more important. Trusting that our peoples and the international community will meet this difficult decision with understanding, we should focus on measures to battle the Coronavirus that threatens the health of entire humanity.”
