People gather at AKM to bid farewell to Sırrı Süreyya Önder

People have started arriving at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) to attend the memorial for Sırrı Süreyya Önder.

Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and member of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Imralı Delegation, passed away on Saturday at Florence Nightingale Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

A memorial is being held today at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Taksim. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM, and many people from the worlds of art and politics have begun arriving at the venue.


The ceremony will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a video presentation about Sırrı Süreyya Önder’s life. Speeches will be delivered by his daughter, Ceren Önder Kandemir; DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan; İmralı Delegation member Pervin Buldan; and Speaker of the Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş.

After the ceremony, a funeral prayer will be held at Levent Barbaros Mosque following the afternoon prayer. Sırrı Süreyya Önder will be laid to rest at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.

Additionally, the DEM Party will begin receiving condolences starting Monday at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall in Istanbul and at its provincial and district offices across other cities.
