Police attack Suruç Families Initiative marching to Ankara, detain 5

Police attacked the Suruç Families Initiative which is holding a march from Istanbul to Ankara as part of its ‘Justice for Suruç, Justice for All’ campaign. Police has detained 5 members of the initiative by using violence.

The police attacked 8 people from the Suruç Families Initiative, who are marching from Kadıköy-Istanbul to Ankara as part of its ‘Justice for Suruç, Justice for All’ campaign.

Before the attack, the activists gathered in front of Kadıköy Municipality, where 33 young activists had set out for Suruç 6 years ago, and made a statement under the police blockade.

The statement noted that although 6 years have passed since the Suruç bombing which killed 33 young activists, there has been no progress in the case.

“We know that peace and freedom will come to these lands with the investigations into the massacres and the prosecution of those responsible,” the statement said.

After the statement, a delegation of 8 activists from the Suruç Families Initiative was blocked by police.

The police cited t-shirts of the activists that read “Justice for Suruç, justice for all” as the reason.

5 out of 8 people who wanted to protest the arbitrary police intervention with a sit-in protest were detained by the police in a violent way.

In the meantime, the police prevented members of the press from taking pictures, again by using violence.
