The Health Academy, established in 2017 in Rojav,a becomes a faculty connected to the Rojava University.
The Health Academy, which was established on 4 May 2017 by the North and East Syrian Health Committee to meet the healthcare personnel needs of the hospitals, started to serve in the Serêkaniyê district of the Hesekê Canton.
Later on, on 7 September 2018, a center connected to the academy was established in the town of Himo in Qamishlo. The academy, which responded to needs such as nurses, pharmacists and health technicians, was then connected to Rojava University.
There was a long debate about whether to turn the academy into a faculty where scientific research could be also carried out.
Rojava University co-chair Rohan Mustefa talked to ANHA about the issue and said that a joint decision was taken as a result of this long debate. The Health Academy was transformed into the Faculty of Health, Mustefa said and continued: "The Health Academy has carried out important works in recent years. We thought the academy had reached a faculty level and decided in that sense. Now, the academy will serve as a faculty and train doctors."
Mustefa added: "We think the faculty will be ready for education in the 2020-2021 academic year. The direction of the faculty has been newly elected. Committees and regulations have been prepared. Specialist cadres for education were brought from Rojava and outside of Syria. With the full introduction of the faculty, we will increase health education from 4 to 6 years."
Stating that students who are currently studying at the Academy can continue their education, Mustefa said: "Students enrolled at the Academy will not be affected by this decision. They will be able to complete their education as scheduled. Our aim is to make students become more scientifically equipped. In the future, we plan to separate the nursing education from this faculty and make it a separate faculty."
