A delegation of French and Italian parliamentarians and mayors visited the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). The visit, which took place on January 24, was attended by many journalists from various countries. The latest developments in the region were discussed, and questions, answers, and important evaluations were exchanged.
The meeting between the French and Italian parliamentary delegation, mayors, and YPJ leaders focused on the recent developments and the current situation in Syria and the region. The meeting was attended by leading military figures of the YPJ, including Commander Rohilat Afrin, YPJ spokesperson Ruksan Mohammed, and members of the military council Lana Hussein, Destina Halab, Samar Hasaka, and Rukhash Afrin, a member of the YPJ External Relations Unit.
The General Commander of the YPJ, Rohilat Afrin, began by welcoming the parliamentary delegation and journalists. She then provided a comprehensive assessment of the current situation in the region. Commander Rohilat Afrin highlighted the anniversary of the liberation of Kobani as well as the anniversary of the Turkish occupation attacks on Afrin. She stated, “Kobani was a great war and resistance witnessed by the entire world. Our people in Afrin have faced displacement and enormous hardships twice.”
Commander Rohilat Afrin spoke about the ongoing battles in areas such as the Tishreen Dam and Qaraqozaq Bridge, emphasizing the role of the YPJ in resisting these attacks and their significant contribution to defending the region.
During the meeting, parliamentarians and journalists asked questions about the future of a new Syria and how defense forces such as the SDF and the YPJ would take their place and influence the future of Syria.
Commander Rohilat Afrin responded, saying: “Our forces are organized, well-trained, and possess extensive experience in various fields. The SDF can bring its expertise to a new Syrian army and have a greater impact.” She added that it is essential for the YPJ to participate in the Syrian Democratic Ministry of Defense and to play a role in protecting society and women across Syria.
The meeting concluded with answers to various questions, yielding positive outcomes. The parliamentary delegation, mayors, and journalists expressed their gratitude to the YPJ leaders for their warm reception. Meanwhile, Commander Rohilat Afrin expressed her appreciation for the parliamentary delegation’s visit.
