In the 2024-2025 academic year, the Northern and Eastern Syria Education and Training Committee decided to establish “Parent Councils” in schools. In this context, work has begun to establish councils in 4,134 schools in the region.
The main purpose of the councils is to support students’ educational processes, increase the quality of education and find solutions to problems experienced in schools. In addition, organizing cultural and sports events, monitoring student behavior, increasing security measures in schools and supporting the general functioning of schools are also among the responsibilities of the councils.
Qamishlo Schools Administration spokesperson Stêra Îbrahîm told ANHA that the councils are the first point of contact to solve problems in schools and that situations where solutions cannot be provided are conveyed to the Schools Administration and then to the Legal Affairs Department.
Structure and members of councils
The councils must consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 13 people. In addition to the school spokesperson, students' parents and Teachers' Union representatives, the council also includes teachers who teach "Society and Life" in primary education, "Culture and Ethics" and "Jineoloji" in middle and high schools. While the council members and spokespersons are elected by the families of the students, the spokesperson must be from the families.
The students' situations will be monitored by the teachers and council members. The students' education process will be evaluated in regular meetings. At the end of the academic year, a general assembly meeting will be held to make a general assessment and review the council's work.
Rezan Hemo, co-spokesperson of Şehit Gabar High School in Qamishlo, said that they held meetings with the parents before the councils were established. Hemo emphasized that the opinions and suggestions of the families were received in these meetings and emphasized that an important step was taken for the education of the students with the active participation of the parents.
