The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced the death toll for the past 100 days after Bashar Al-Assad escaped from Syria and military and security forces disintegrated, which led to a state of security vacuum in all Syrian provinces.
“While military forces, which then took control of areas that had been under the control of the former regime, faced considerable challenges regarding the security and economic situations, weak-willed individuals exploited the state of security disorder and looted public properties,” the observatory said.
SOHR stated: “Since the fall of the Al-Assad regime, members of security and military forces have been subjected to scores of armed attacks and assassinations in all provinces, while murder crimes have dramatically increased. In addition, several provinces have experienced massacres and executions over sectarian and political affiliations. All those factors have created a gap among segments of Syrian society and hindered efforts to establish a new Syria where Syrians can enjoy democracy, freedom and equality.”
During the period between December 8, 2024, and March 18, 2025, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented the deaths of 6,316 people in different circumstances in all Syrian provinces. The death toll included 4,711 civilian fatalities: 4,172 young and adult men, 345 women and 194 children.
The monthly breakdown of fatalities is as follows:
-December (the period between December 8, 2024, and December 31, 2024): 2,354 fatalities; they are as follows:
- 1,894 civilians: 1,839 young and adult men, 21 women and 34 children.
- 460 non-civilians.
-January: 1,122 fatalities; they are as follows:
- 679 civilians: 480 young and adult men, 146 women and 53 children.
- 443 non-civilians.
-February: 603 fatalities; they are as follows:
- 435 civilians: 347 young and adult men, 46 women and 42 children.
- 168 non-civilians.
-March (the period between March 1 and March 18): 2,237 fatalities; they are as follows:
- 1,703 civilians: 1,506 young and adult men, 132 women and 65 children.
- 534 non-civilians.
1,805 civilians extrajudicially executed for belonging to former regime and under retaliatory actions based on sectarian affiliation
Sectarian militarization in Syria threatens the unity and civil peace in Syria and fuels divisions and retaliatory actions.
The Syrian Observatory stresses that local authorities have to adopt strict measures that could potentially put an end to the increasing murder crimes in Syria and exert diligent efforts to enhance the fundamentals of unity and peaceful coexistence among Syrian people of all backgrounds (ethnic, sectarian and religious).
In the past 100 days, SOHR documented the extrajudicial execution of 1,805 civilians, the largest share of whom were executed in March following attacks carried out by gunmen on March 6, targeting checkpoints of the Ministries of Interior and Defence in Syrian coastline.
The monthly distribution of civilians, who were executed in the past 100 days, is as follows:
- December (the period between December 8, 2024, and December 31, 2024): 141 civilians.
- January: 74 civilians.
- February: 60 civilians.
- March (the period between March 1 and March 18): 1,530 civilians.
The Syrian Observatory stressed that turning sectarian identity and affiliation into a tool for conflict and provocation paves the way for endless enmities and hinders efforts to reach sustainable peace based on justice and equal citizenship.
SOHR also reaffirmed the importance of achieving transitional justice, which aims to provide recognition to victims, enhance the trust of individuals in state institutions, reinforce respect for human rights and promote the rule of law, as a step towards reconciliation and the prevention of new violations and establishing a new Syria.
SOHR called on the international community once again to work hard to stop the bloodshed in Syria, stressing that the people of Syria have been facing tyranny and oppression in their noble endeavour and cause to obtain justice, democracy, freedom and equality.
"The Syrian Observatory renews its commitment to continue monitoring and documenting all the developments on the ground in Syria, including the massacres, violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Syrian people, as well as publishing all relevant statistics and causalities of such heinous acts, and hopes to help all the ongoing efforts of bringing the perpetrators to special international courts, so that they do not escape justice for the crimes they committed against the people of Syria," the observatory stated.
